SCOTTSDALE, AZ -- Smartphones are expected to double their share of the handset market to nearly 20% by 2013. Although growth will be strong globally, the US market will see the greatest increase, reports In-Stat.

Smartphones with Linux-based OSes will see the highest growth, outselling Windows Mobile, RIM and iPhone OSX, according to In-Stat.

“Strong demand is being driven by device manufacturers leveraging open OS devices to reinvent the mobile phone experience,” said Frank Dickson, vice president of mobile Internet group at In-Stat.
