MILPITAS, CA — Sales of software for printed circuit board and multichip module design rose 19.8% year-over-year to $240.5 million in the September quarter, the Electronic System Design Alliance said today.

The Americas led the way, with sales of $83.3 million, followed by Asia-Pacific at $59.2 million, Europe/Middle East at $53.7 million, and Japan at $44.3 million.

The four-quarters moving average, which compares the most recent four quarters to the prior four quarters, increased 10.3%.

Overall electronic design automation industry revenue increased 8.9% during the period to $2.57 billion. The four-quarters moving average increased 6.8%. “The EDA industry reported increased revenue in the third qurater compared to 2018, including double digit growth in the CAE, PCB/MCM, and IC Physical Design & Verification categories,” said Walden C. Hiring continued apace, the ESD Alliance said. Companies that were tracked increasing staffing by 6.6% year-over-year and 1.4% sequentially to 44,950 professionals.

By product category, computer-aided engineering generated revenue of $838.3 million, up 10.8%. The four-quarters moving average for CAE increased 7%. IC physical design and verification revenue rose 17.2% $557.6 million, while the four-quarters moving average increased 6.9%.

Semiconductor intellectual property revenue ticked up 3.7% to $835.9 million, with the four-quarters moving average rising 7.9%.

Services revenue fell 19.9% to $95.4 million. The four-quarters moving average decreased 9.9%.

The Americas, EDA’s largest region, purchased $1.17 billion worth of EDA products and services in the third quarter, up 10.4%. The four-quarters moving average for the Americas increased 1%. EMEA sales ticked up 0.1% to $351.1 million, and the four-quarters moving average decreased 2.3%.

Third quarter 2019 revenue from Japan fell 9.4% to $219.3 million, while the four-quarters moving average declined 5.7%. APAC revenue rose 5.7% to $827.5 million. The four-quarters moving average increased 13.5%.
