SAN JOSE — The 90-day moving average orders at North America-based semiconductor equipment manufacturers rose 18.1% year-over-year to $1.17 billion worldwide in September, the industry trade group SEMI said today.

The book-to-bill ratio slipped 0.94, the lowest mark since the chip recovery began in December 2012. A book-to-bill of 0.94 means that $94 worth of orders were received for every $100 of product billed for the month. It was the first month the ratio, considered a leading indicator of future demand, fell below the benchmark 1.0 level since September last year.

The 90-day average worldwide bookings in September was down 12.9% from the revised August level of $1.35 billion. The three-month average billings was $1.25 billion, down 3.3% from August and 22.5% higher than September 2013.

The SEMI book-to-bill is a ratio of three-month moving averages of worldwide bookings and billings for North American-based semiconductor equipment manufacturers. Billings and bookings figures are in millions of US dollars.
